SANTIAGO CALATRAVA

Born on July 28, 1951, in Benimamet, near Valencia, he attended the Art School in Valencia from 1968 to 1969 and graduated from the university there in 1974 with a degree in architecture. From 1975 to 1979 he studied civil engineering at the Federal Polytechnic in Zurich, where he obtained a Ph.D. in technical science in 1981 with a thesis entitled "Concerning the Foldability of Spaceframes." In the same year he opened an architectural and engineering office in Zurich; in 1989 he opened a second office in Paris. He has participated in numerous competitions in Europe and America; most of his built work is in Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, and Canada.
